Asda’s new ‘free-range’ milk to carry Pasture Promise logo

Asda is launching a new ‘free-range’ milk carrying the Pasture Promise logo which guarantees that it comes from cows grazed for at least six months of the year and which offers farmers a fair price.

Asda has worked with the Free Range Dairy Network to bring this new product range to their stores.

The Free Range Dairy Network licences the Pasture Promise logo that will appear on the “free range” milk sold in Asda, guaranteeing that the milk they are buying meets its minimum grazing standards.

Nathan Williams, Food Business Manager at Compassion said: “We applaud Asda for supporting pasture-based dairy farming and for paying a fair price to farmers for their 'free-range' milk.

“We encourage more retailers to support production systems where dairy cows are free to graze during the grass growing season, which is ultimately better for their welfare, and to introduce method of production labelling to provide consumers with a clear choice as to the kind of farming system they want to support.”

Last year, Waitrose also publicised their commitment to guarantee that all the dairy cows that produce the supermarket’s milk have at least 100 days of outdoor grazing every year. They also ensure that all their dairy calves are reared in higher welfare systems, for which they have received a Good Dairy Award from Compassion.
