Booker and Spar wake up to cage-free movement

The latest in a long line of cage-free pledges comes from Booker, who has announced that they will be going cage-free on their whole eggs by 2025. Booker is a wholesaler which supplies 125,000 independent retailers and 468,000 catering customers in the UK and also who owns the Premier, Londis and Budgens convenience store groups (with more than 4,800 stores between them).

Booker says: “As consumer trends develop so do our ranges and in this respect eggs are no different. We are fully supportive of the move to cage-free eggs and will be fully cage free by 2025.”

Booker are joined by one of the world’s largest food retain chains, Spar, which boasts 2,400 stores in the UK – they have also committed to selling only cage-free whole eggs by 2025 in the UK.

Compassion’s Head of Food Business, Jemima Jewell, said: “These announcements from Booker and Spar to be cage-free on whole eggs by 2025 are a real game-changer as they represent the supply to hundreds of thousands of independent retailers, pubs, restaurants and cafés across the UK.

These commitments show decisively that the cage-free revolution is not limited to the supermarkets – it is a shift that all companies in the food industry are waking up to, whether big or small, retail or food service.”
